The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is a non-invasive, evidence-based auditory intervention that involves listening to 5 hours of filtered music. The SSP has been designed specifically to stimulate the Vegas nerve in the middle ear and re-set the nervous system. This positive stimulation leads us to feel: emotionally more regulated, become open to connecting with others, and become more resilient.

The SSP may be helpful in reducing or improving symptoms for...

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Inability to self-regulate

  • Neurodevelopmental (ASD, ADHD) related difficulties (such as social/emotional difficulties and/or inability to focus)

  • Auditory and other sensory processing differences

  • Trauma related challenges

  • Sleep

SSP is provided by many other allied health professionals including pediatricians, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, speech therapists, school counselors, and more.

What equipment is required?

  • Smartphones (either iPhone or Android) or tablets (either Apple or Android) and the “Unyte” app.

  • Wired (no Bluetooth) over-the-ear headphones” (with big padded ear cups) required. The noise-cancelling function should be turned off. Earbuds can NOT be used.

How long the SSP take to complete?

The protocol involves 5 hours total of listening that can occur over the course of days, weeks, or months depending on what is right for your body and nervous system. The optimal listening time will be tailored to suit your needs after the initial consultation. With SSP there is the potential for some things to get worse initially before they get better. I do our best to avoid this by paying close attention to how the nervous system is responding and pausing or going as slowly as needed to keep the process gentle as possible.

***Please note: Safe and Sound Protocol is an evidence-based therapeutic tool designed to work with other therapeutic approaches and modalities, not a stand-alone therapy.

With my complex trauma history, I always felt anxious. About 4 hours into Safe and Sound, I noticed a shift in my nervous system. I felt so much calmer and feeling so grounded like I never felt before. Thank you!
